Bridal hairstyle

In this practical, we had to produce a bridal hairstyle on an actual person rather than our Katie heads. I chose to work with Sophia. Part of the task was to include plaits and have some sort of up-do, including the use of a straightener/curler or crimper.

Before the lesson I did some research on bridal hair and looked up different styles of up-dos and plaits. I also watched YouTube tutorials which helped me come up with a final idea. I didn’t want to do something too extreme or sophisticated. I wanted to keep it simple yet elegant.

Step-by-Step guide:
  1.        Firstly, brush the hair to get rid of any knots.
  2.        Section the hair into 4 parts.
  3.        Starting at the lower section (nape), take small amounts of hair and curl them using the wand.
  4.        Do this all the way around the entire head.
  5.        Now, you will need to part the hair to one side using a pin tail comb. You may ask your model what side they prefer, or how they usually do it themselves.
  6.        The side with the less amount of will need to be plaited. (This will be a loose French braid). Continue the plait all the way down until you reach the ends of the hair and secure it with an elastic band.
  7.        The remaining hair will be put into a wrap bun at the back. Once you have secured the bun with hair grips, wrap the plait you created on the other side around the bun. Secure this with hair grips.
  8.        You may curl the front parts of the hair e.g. the fringe again if you wish to.

I was really pleased with the final look. I was quite nervous beforehand about working on Sophia in case I hurt her head or burnt her by accident as it’s happened to me a lot before at salons. I have done hair before in my previous course and during work experience at Toni & Guy and to be honest it’s not my favourite thing to do. I get really paranoid and anxious about what I’m doing. I tried to communicate with Sophia and told her to be completely honest with me if I did anything wrong however she was completely fine.

Luckily, I managed to finish the look on time which was something I was worried about. Sophia had beautiful hair to work with however it was very long. Whilst I was curling it, my hands started to ache towards the end. I wasn’t so pleased with the curls because after I had curled the entire head, I realised I was using the wand incorrectly. Fortunately, Helen was there to point this out to me so I don’t repeat it in future lessons.
